Q: Is Hydrocotyle leucocephala safe for shrimp and fish?

Yes, it’s completely safe. Its leaves and stems provide hiding spots for shrimp and fry, while floating growth creates shade that helps fish feel secure. It does not release harmful substances into the water.

Question 1

How fast does Hydrocotyle leucocephala grow?

Accepted Answer

This plant grows quickly, often adding several inches per week under good light and nutrient conditions. It can spread across the surface or climb upward, so regular trimming is needed to keep it in shape.

Question 2

Can Hydrocotyle leucocephala grow in ponds or outdoors?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it can grow in ponds and outdoor water gardens as long as the climate is warm and frost-free. It thrives in shallow water or along pond edges, where it can root or float freely.

Question 3

Is Hydrocotyle leucocephala safe for shrimp and fish?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it’s completely safe. Its leaves and stems provide hiding spots for shrimp and fry, while floating growth creates shade that helps fish feel secure. It does not release harmful substances into the water.

Question 4

Why is Hydrocotyle leucocephala melting after planting?

Accepted Answer

Melting often happens when the plant transitions from emersed (grown above water) to submerged growth. Old leaves may die back, but new underwater leaves will appear once it adjusts. Stress from poor lighting, unstable water conditions, or lack of nutrients can also cause melting.
