The flamboyant male kiwi vine on the garage deck had become unruly, tender tendrils shooting ebulliently outwards and upwards into the Spring. This bad boy grows 12-15 feet in a year and is everywhere aggressive. Its leaves, decked out in party colors of mottled pink, white and green, fairly sparkle in the morning sun, his loud declarations shouting “Look at me! My flowers are nearly here!”

It’s a lovely summer day and I place two, bright pink children’s chairs under the male kiwi, a.k.a. “Mr. Show Off”. The chairs are plastic monstrosities; hand-me-downs to our daughter from someone, from somewhere, at sometime in the recent past. I will be very glad to part company with them as I am unsure of their stability and they are not to my taste. For now however, they are at hand and they match the male kiwi perfectly. They are cute and cheerful under Mr. Show Off’s graceful pink, green and white canopy. It’s nice and cool under there. I put a stump on wheels inside this living tent to use as a table. “The girls will love this” I think, smiling to myself.

The Kiwi Vine Part 3: Mom, Come With Me
“Well”, he said after he carefully and assuredly pulled out the thorn out of my right eyelid with a sharp tug, “you are very, very lucky Mom. The thorn has pierced your eyelid sideways and did not touch your cornea at all. You could very easily have been blinded.”
“Wow. It doesn’t actually hurt that much, but it’s sure gonna bruise” I rejoined. “Ooh, that’s a big Mama thorn too. Did you take a photo?!” I asked, a Mom excited for her son to build his resumé.
“Nope. Should have though.”
