Favoritz™ & The Garden Wiki

Plants are added to your personal garden directly from the public Favoritz™ gallery (/plant-profile). As you browse plants, simply click the star icon in the upper corner of any card—it is instantly saved to your personal My Favoritz™ / My Plants collection (/my-garden/plants). Each plant card also provides two quick-action buttons:

      • Plant Profile Button: Navigates to the species overview featuring comprehensive botanical traits, cultivation guides, and community photo galleries;
      • Plus Button (+): Direct shortcut to upload a photo of a specific variety or cultivar.

Each plant card displays a single circular star button. The background color of the star visually represents how popular that photo or species is across the community:

      • Light green / cream background: «favorited» status — plant has been favorited (1+ saves);
      • Rich olive-green background: «popular» status — popular plant (2 to 25 saves);
      • Golden amber / yellow background: «very popular» status — very popular plant (26 to 50 saves);
      • Pink / fuchsia background: «super-popular» status — super-popular plant (over 50 saves across the community).

Your entire personal plant collection is managed within My Favoritz™ / My Plants (/my-garden/plants), organized into two tabs:

      • REAL: Verified living botanical species and cultivars favorited with a star from the catalog;
      • FANTASY: Imaginative hybrid plant creations designed by you or other members in FantasyPlantz™.

Members do not need to maintain separate static lists of "growing/sharing/seeking". Instead, when you join or host a specific Meet-Up, you tag the plants directly inside the exchange card to indicate what you are bringing (I'll share some) and what you hope to receive (I'd love some).

The Garden Wiki is PlantShare's collective botanical encyclopedia. If a plant is not yet cataloged, you can contribute it using two specialized submission forms:

      1. Start a New One (Fun): A simplified form for everyday gardeners—enter the common name, attach photos, and write a brief description;
      2. Build Entire New One (Professional): An in-depth form for horticulturists featuring taxonomic ranks, genus, species, USDA hardiness zones, and botanical traits.

The platform supports JPEG, JPG, PNG, and modern mobile HEIC formats (commonly used by Apple iPhones). The maximum upload size is 10 MB per photo.

«Our Curators» are PlantShare's internal team of botanists and moderators. When you upload additional photos to a plant profile, they undergo moderation and are approved for the public gallery within a week. Only original member photos or images with open creative commons licenses (Copyright P, CC0, CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-NC) are accepted.

Common names vary widely across regions and languages, frequently confusing gardeners. Universal botanical binomial nomenclature guarantees accuracy regarding plant variety, pet toxicity, light exposure, and cold hardiness.

It’s an online list of plants that neighbors will share.

It’s always good to have a second pair of eyes to check a listing. “Our Curators” are plant experts who love learning and will take the care and time needed to ensure that the information is as correct as possible.

The pictures, search window, and the filters in "Plants" are a good place to start. Staff at your local nursery can help with plant ID. Here are some online resources:

Yes, we’d love help! PlantShare is built by and for the gardening community. Please email info@plant-share.com .

We’d love gardening enthusiasts, retailers, growers, and plant professionals from taxonomists to breeders to join the fun. Open “Suggest a New Plant”, complete a “Plant Profile” for new plants that meet PS standards, and we’ll contact you about becoming a curator of “Plants”.

Email us at info@plant-share.com. We’ll review it and get back to you. Thanks in advance!

PS was founded by a plant biologist, Dina Russell, so our standards are high. We take great care to cross-check the information using many resources. But we do make mistakes, so please let us know if you can help!

We scour educational and government websites (e.g., USDA), ask other professionals, garden clubs, and plant lovers, and of course, the internet.

It’s the sum total of more than 1 h of research for each species, including photos, links and first-person experience.

The words are interchangeable in meaning but arose in different industries. ‘Variety’ is most common in horticulture, whereas ‘hybrid’ is used by plant breeders.

A species is a specific plant with its own unique name. All variations in appearance, such as color or flower shape, are ‘varieties’ within that species.

Common names are like nicknames; everyone gets a few and if you are really popular (for good or bad), you get a lot of them. Also, a plant often grows in many places around the world, so they collect names in every place they grow.

Like any marketplace, the answer to that question is always changing. Greater demand means more supply is needed. The more active members, the greater the supply.

If a plant grows where you live, that is, it is in your climate zone, it’s availability depends on the local supply and demand for that plant. Listing plants you grow helps because then we can reach out when supplies start to run low.

No. PlantShare is a gift-economy community: members share homegrown plants with each other for free at Meet-Ups. PlantShare does not hold a license to sell plants, so plant sales are not available on the platform.

Members give homegrown, local plants to each other rather than throw them away. Plants listed online and given freely by neighbors are not to be sold for commercial use.
